SM EXPLORE

Seeing a campus before you apply changes everything. Students who visit their shortlisted destinations consistently report higher satisfaction with their final choice ? and fewer mid-course transfers.

How it works

  • 1

    Select target destinations

Which countries and cities are on your shortlist? Plan the visit around your top 1 or 2.

  • 2

    Time the visit strategically

University open days, October-November or February-March are best for Ireland and UK.

  • 3

    Prepare visit goals

What questions do you need answered? Course content, campus life, accommodation, transport, costs.

  • 4

    Book SM counsellor meeting

Meet our Ireland or UK based counsellors in person while you are there.

  • 5

    Document your impressions

Photos, cost estimates, notes on commute ? compare against your alternative shortlist city.

    1. Why a campus visit matters

An in-person campus visit can confirm or overturn a shortlist decision. Students who visit Ireland and find Dublin too expensive sometimes switch to Cork or Galway. Others who planned UK-only discover that an Irish university fits their goals better.

A 4 to 6 day trip costs far less than a mid-course transfer or a year of unhappiness in the wrong city.

    • Walk the campus you plan to spend 1 to 4 years at
    • See the accommodation area and test the commute during rush hour
    • Attend an open day ? ask actual students, not just admissions staff
    • Check the library, labs and sports facilities relevant to your course
    • Visit the international student office ? they handle your day-to-day problems
    • Meet SM counsellors for an in-person shortlist review while you are there

    2. Best times to visit Ireland and UK

Ireland and UK university open days are typically held in October-November and February-March. These are the best times to visit ? campuses are active, students are around, and admissions staff are staffed for questions.

Summer visits are quieter but less representative ? campus life looks very different in September when 20,000 students return.

    • October/November: main open day season for most Irish and UK universities
    • February/March: second open day season ? closer to January intake period
    • Avoid July/August: summer break; campus quiet and less useful for impression
    • Book open day places in advance ? popular universities fill weeks ahead
    • Public transport in Dublin: Luas, DART and buses ? test your future commute
    • UK cities: London, Manchester, Nottingham, Edinburgh all have good student transport

    Guide · 03

    3. What to look at in accommodation areas

Where you live affects your mental health, finances and study habits as much as the course content. Spend at least half a day in the accommodation area ? not just the campus.

    • Walk from student housing to the main campus building (time it)
    • Check nearest supermarket, GP, pharmacy and transport stop
    • Look at the rental price signs on estate agent windows ? reality vs research
    • Ask current students which areas are safe, affordable and student-friendly
    • Dublin: Phibsborough, Rathmines, Drumcondra, Ranelagh ? popular student areas
    • London: zone 2/3 areas near university campus line; check TfL journey planner

    Guide · 04

    4. Questions to ask on a campus visit

Most students ask about course content ? and ignore the operational questions that affect daily life. Here is what to actually investigate when you are there.

    • How many contact hours per week is this course? (Not just listed on website)
    • What percentage of students find graduate employment in Ireland/UK after this course?
    • What is the average class size at this level?
    • Does the faculty support Erasmus, internship or industry placement?
    • What does the library/ lab/ studio access look like outside 9 to 5?
    • How does the international student society work and how active is it?
