Health cover

A missing or incorrect insurance certificate is one of the most common reasons students face delays at Stamp 2 / IRP registration, biometrics or university enrolment. Student Matters explains what each destination expects and what to look for before you buy.

Why students choose this support

Visa & registration linked

Ireland Stamp 2 and some visa applications require proof of valid private medical cover.

Name and date accuracy

Certificate name must match passport exactly; cover must start on or before arrival.

Inpatient minimum

Cheap policies often miss minimum inpatient / hospitalisation thresholds required by universities.

24/7 assistance

Emergency evacuation, medical helpline and claims support ? check these before buying.

How it works

  • 1

    Confirm destination requirements

Ireland, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany and the USA all have different expectations ? some mandatory, some advised.

  • 2

    Choose cover level

Minimum inpatient cover, outpatient access, repatriation, pre-existing exclusions ? check all four.

  • 3

    Match name to passport

Insurance certificate name must exactly match your passport ? even a middle-name difference causes registration issues.

  • 4

    Start date = arrival date

Cover gap on landing day is a common mistake. Policy must be active from your travel date.

  • 5

    Keep digital and printed copies

University enrolment, Stamp 2, accommodation check-in ? you may need proof at each.

    1. Why insurance matters at every destination

International students are not covered by national health systems in most countries. A single hospitalisation without insurance can cost thousands ? and in Ireland, missing insurance proof means you cannot complete Stamp 2 immigration registration on time.

Universities often require insurance proof at enrolment. Visa applications in some destinations list insurance in the document checklist. Buying cheap cover that misses minimum thresholds is common ? and expensive to fix mid-term.

    • Ireland: private medical insurance required for Stamp 2 / GNIB registration
    • UK: Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) usually paid with Student Route ? check if university also requires separate policy
    • Australia: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory and attached to CoE
    • Canada: varies by province and institution ? confirm with your university
    • Germany: public student insurance available under 30; private for others
    • USA: universities typically require their own health plan unless waived

    2. What to check in any student health policy

Price is the worst way to compare student insurance. An inexpensive policy with high excess or low inpatient limits will fail you at the moment you need it most.

    • Inpatient / hospitalisation cover: check the per-event maximum
    • Outpatient / GP access: some plans cover emergency only
    • Repatriation and medical evacuation: essential for serious illness or injury
    • Pre-existing conditions: read what is excluded before buying
    • Mental health cover: increasingly required or expected by universities
    • 24/7 emergency helpline: vital when you do not know the local system
    • Claims process: ideally direct billing with hospitals, not just reimbursement

    3. Ireland ? Stamp 2 and annual registration

Non-EEA students in Ireland must register with the Irish Registration Office (Garda National Immigration Bureau in Dublin or regional offices elsewhere) to receive their Irish Residence Permit (IRP). Private medical insurance is a standard document requirement.

You register annually ? which means insurance must be renewed and presented every year, not just on arrival. Student Matters includes insurance in your pre-departure checklist so you never face a surprise at the registration counter.

    • IRP registration: bring original insurance certificate with dates covering the registration period
    • Policy name must match IRP / passport exactly
    • Annual renewal: renew before your IRP renewal date, not after
    • Many students use specialist student insurance providers covering Ireland specifically
    • Check if your university has a group scheme ? sometimes included in fees
    • Ask SM for providers commonly used by students at your target institution

    4. UK ? Immigration Health Surcharge explained

Most students on the UK Student Route pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of their visa application. This gives access to the NHS. However, some universities also require a separate private policy ? check your offer letter.

IHS is paid per year of study. As of the latest update, rates have increased significantly ? factor this into your total visa cost.

    • IHS included in Student Route visa application fee calculation
    • Covers NHS treatment during your course
    • Some universities require additional private cover for dental / optical / specialist
    • Confirm IHS rate at the time of your application ? rates can change
    • If visa is refused, IHS is typically refundable

    Guide · 05

    5. Australia ? OSHC is mandatory

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a legal requirement for all international students in Australia on a student visa. It must be purchased before your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued ? and is usually organised via your institution.

OSHC covers doctor visits, hospital, limited dental and ambulance. Cover must be continuous for the full period of your student visa.

    • OSHC mandatory ? cannot obtain CoE without it
    • Usually purchased through your institution or approved providers
    • Cover period must match student visa length
    • Dependents on your visa must also be covered
    • Student Matters confirms OSHC requirements during Australia visa counselling

    Guide · 06

    6. Dependents and family cover

If a spouse or children travel with you on dependent visas, their insurance needs to be planned separately or as a family policy. Many student plans cover the primary student only.

    • Check if your policy has a family or dependent add-on
    • Dependent insurance must meet the same name/date accuracy standards
    • Some destinations require dependents to have their own separate cover
    • Children in school: some school registration requires proof of child insurance
    • Always confirm dependent rules with SM before purchasing any policy
