Family

Taking family with you when you study abroad significantly increases the complexity of your visa file. Funds thresholds are higher, housing must be family-suitable, and some destinations restrict or delay dependent rights.

Student Matters reviews your specific situation early ? before you commit to a course or intake ? so there are no surprises at the visa stage.

  • Ireland Stamp 2 does NOT grant automatic dependent rights ? plan for employment permit stage
  • UK allows dependents for postgraduate students ? not typically for undergraduates
  • Canada open work permit for spouses is one of the most family-friendly student routes
  • Family funds thresholds are significantly higher than single-student applications
  • Housing must be family-suitable ? most campus halls are single-occupancy

Why students choose this support

Eligibility overview

Which destinations allow dependents more easily ? and when restrictions apply.

Funds planning

Extra living costs for spouse and children must be evidenced in visa funds statement.

Family-suitable housing

Not all student halls accept families ? private rental often required.

Document preparation

Marriage and birth certificates, consent letters, translations and attestations.

How it works

  • 1

    Confirm eligibility early

Some destinations restrict dependent rights for certain course levels or durations. Check before applying.

  • 2

    Calculate family funds threshold

Funds evidence must cover student + all dependents for the full course duration.

  • 3

    Arrange family accommodation

Private rental with sufficient rooms ? not campus halls.

  • 4

    Prepare relationship documents

Marriage certificate, birth certificates, civil registration proofs ? attested and translated where required.

  • 5

    Apply simultaneously or sequentially

Some destinations require dependent visa after principal student visa ? confirm timing with SM.

    1. Ireland ? dependent rules for non-EEA students

Non-EEA students on Stamp 2 in Ireland do NOT have an automatic right to bring dependents. Dependent join permission in Ireland is typically linked to employment (Stamp 1 Critical Skills) rather than study.

This is a significant planning point. Students expecting to bring a spouse on a student visa to Ireland should discuss the realistic options with Student Matters before committing.

    • Stamp 2 (study): no automatic dependent permission
    • Stamp 1G (post-graduation): no automatic dependent permission
    • Stamp 1 Critical Skills: spouse eligible for Stamp 3 or 1 dependent permission
    • Family-friendly route requires employment permit stage ? not the study stage
    • Some exceptions exist ? always verify current INIS/ISD guidance
    • Plan finances for family reunion at employment permit stage, not visa application stage

    2. UK ? dependents on Student Route

The UK Student Route allows dependents for students studying a course of more than 6 months at postgraduate level, or government-sponsored students. Undergraduate dependents are generally not permitted (with some exceptions).

UK dependent visas require immigration health surcharge, separate biometrics and funds evidence for each dependent.

    • Postgraduate (PG) taught or research: dependents usually permitted
    • Undergraduate: generally not permitted (check current rules)
    • Dependent must apply separately via UK Student Dependent visa
    • IHS payable for dependents too (significant cost)
    • Funds must cover main student + all dependents
    • Dependent partner can work full-time on UK dependent route

    3. Australia ? student guardian and dependent rules

Australia has a student dependent visa (Subclass 500 for dependents of student visa holders). Spouses and children under 18 of eligible students can apply. The primary student must be enrolled in a higher education or ELICOS course of at least 12 months.

    • Student dependent visa issued alongside or after primary student visa
    • Dependent partner can work up to 48 hours per fortnight (subject to change ? verify)
    • OSHC must be purchased for all dependents
    • Funds evidence must include dependent living costs
    • Children attending Australian school: confirm school fees and enrolment requirements
    • Verify current work rights for student dependents on the Australian Home Affairs website

    4. Canada ? open work permit for dependent spouses

Canada offers a relatively family-friendly student path. Spouses of eligible full-time students at designated learning institutions (DLI) may qualify for an open work permit ? allowing them to work for any Canadian employer.

This makes Canada one of the more attractive destinations for married students.

    • Eligible students: full-time study at DLI at Bachelor's, Master's, PhD level
    • Spouse/common-law partner: may apply for open work permit
    • Children: may attend Canadian school (fee-based as international students or free depending on province)
    • Funds must cover all family members for the study period
    • Provincial health insurance varies ? dependents must be covered
    • Verify eligibility with IRCC at the time of application ? rules evolve

    5. Documents for a dependent application

Dependent visa documents vary by destination and relationship. Student Matters builds a complete document list for your specific country, relationship status, and the ages of any children.

    • Marriage certificate: original + certified English translation + attestation
    • Birth certificates: for all children included in application
    • Sponsor (student) visa approval or current valid visa
    • Accommodation proof: property suitable for family ? number of bedrooms relevant
    • Funds evidence: bank statements covering student + all dependents
    • Consent letters: if single parent travelling with child or custody situations
    • Passport-sized photos as per destination specifications

    6. Funds and housing planning for family

The two biggest practical hurdles for family visa applications are (1) demonstrating sufficient funds and (2) securing appropriate housing. Both must be in place before the application ? not planned after arrival.

    • Student halls: mostly single-occupancy or couples rooms ? may not accept children
    • Private rental: 2+ bedroom flat required for family ? plan budget accordingly
    • Dublin, London, Sydney: family rentals are expensive and competitive ? start search early
    • Funds threshold: typically tuition + student living + ?8,000-12,000/yr per dependent (UK) ? check per country
    • SM recommends starting family housing search 4-6 months before intake
    • Connect with SM Connect alumni for family-friendly area recommendations
