    1. RCSI Dublin ? the main route for international students

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) is one of the most internationally recognised medical schools in the world, with campuses in Dublin, Bahrain, Malaysia and Rwanda. It has a long history of accepting high-achieving international students.

RCSI's undergraduate medicine programme (MB BCh BAO) is 5 years. Entry is competitive ? science subjects at A-Level/FSc equivalent and strong English are baseline. A HPAT score may also be required.

    • 5-year undergraduate medicine programme (MB BCh BAO)
    • Internationally recognised qualification ? graduates practice globally
    • Entry requires strong science subjects (Biology, Chemistry) at A-Level equivalent
    • HPAT (Health Professions Admissions Test) may be required for some routes
    • Tuition fees are high ? funds planning essential for visa file
    • See: /rcsi for the full RCSI guide

    2. UCD, TCD and other Irish universities

University College Dublin (UCD) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD) both offer medicine programmes. Entry for international students is through CAO for school leavers or graduate medicine routes.

These universities are highly competitive ? points requirements are among the highest in the Irish system. Student Matters advises on realistic profile assessment before application.

    • UCD Medicine: 6-year programme; Graduate Entry Medicine 4-year route available
    • TCD Medicine: highly competitive; strong science background required
    • University of Galway and UCC also offer medicine with international places
    • HPAT score required for most undergraduate Irish medicine applications
    • Tuition for non-EU students: verify current fees on university websites
    • CAO application required for undergraduate routes

    3. Allied health pathways ? when direct medicine is out of reach

If grades, HPAT scores or funds make direct medicine unrealistic, allied health pathways offer strong careers with faster routes. Student Matters does not encourage students into medicine applications that are unlikely to succeed ? we map the best realistic alternative.

    • Pharmacy (MPharm): 4-5 year programme; strong science required; excellent career outcomes
    • Nursing (BNSc / RGN): 4 years; hospital placements; Clinical Skills permit eligible on graduation
    • Physiotherapy: 4 years; highly competitive in Ireland; Stamp 4 pathway
    • Biomedical Science: 3-4 years; laboratory and research careers; growing demand
    • Public Health: MSc/MPH for graduates; policy, epidemiology and health management roles
    • Graduate Entry Medicine: if you complete a science degree first, GEM is a 4-year route

    4. UK medical schools

UK medical schools are highly competitive for international students. Most require the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test), strong A-Level chemistry and biology, and a compelling personal statement with healthcare work experience.

Graduate entry medicine via GAMSAT is an alternative for university graduates.

    • UCAT required for most UK undergraduate medicine routes
    • A-Level Chemistry + Biology + one other science typical minimum
    • BMAT required for Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and some others
    • Healthcare work experience (clinical shadowing) strongly expected
    • Tuition for international students: ?35,000-45,000/year ? significant funds required
    • Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM): 4 years, GAMSAT required, for degree holders

    Guide · 05

    5. Funds planning for medical programmes

Medical programmes have the highest tuition fees in international education ? often ?40,000-60,000/year in Ireland and similar in the UK. Combined with living costs, a 5-year medicine degree abroad can cost ?250,000-350,000 in total.

Visa files for medical school applications must demonstrate funds for the full or substantial duration of study. Student Matters helps you present funds clearly and honestly.

    • Annual tuition: verify with each institution ? fees change each year
    • Living costs in Dublin: ?12,000-18,000/year estimated (rent is major variable)
    • Scholarships: limited for international medicine students ? apply for all available early
    • Funds evidence: must cover tuition + living for visa credibility
    • Loan options: some families use combination of savings, family loans, commercial loans
    • Never fabricate funds ? medical school visa applications face higher scrutiny
