Fees

Most universities charge a non-refundable application or registration fee. Understanding exactly what each fee covers ? and when to pay it ? protects your money during the application process.

Student Matters advises on application fee timing, deposit policies and refund conditions before you commit. Do not pay fees for universities that are not genuinely on your shortlist.

Application Fee Guide

Why students choose this support

What the fee covers

Application processing, admissions review, portal access ? varies by institution.

Refund policies

Some deposits are partially refunded on visa refusal ? check the policy before paying.

When to pay

Pay application fees only when the university is genuinely on your confirmed shortlist.

UCAS and CAO fees

UCAS (UK) and CAO (Irish undergraduate) have separate application platform fees.

How it works

  • 1

Confirm the university is on your shortlist

Only pay application fees for institutions you genuinely intend to attend if offered.

  • 2

Check fee amount and payment method

University website or application portal ? typically USD/EUR/GBP 50?150 for application; more for enrollment deposit.

  • 3

    Pay via official channel only

University online portal, credit card, or bank transfer to university account directly.

  • 4

    Save the receipt

Application fee receipt + any offer or acceptance confirmation ? keep all in your visa document folder.

  • 5

    Understand refund conditions

If your visa is refused or you withdraw: check whether deposit is refundable and what documentation is required.

  • Guide · 01

    1. Application fees vs enrollment deposits

There are two distinct payments at different stages. Application fees are paid upfront to have your file reviewed ? they are almost always non-refundable regardless of outcome. Enrollment deposits are paid after you accept an offer ? they secure your place and may be partially refundable.

    • Application fee: typically non-refundable; paid at time of application submission
    • Conditional offer acceptance deposit: usually ?1,000??3,000; secures place
    • Unconditional offer deposit: larger; confirms enrollment for visa application
    • Total fees before visa: can reach ?3,000??8,000 across application + deposits
    • Multiply this by number of applications ? apply only where you genuinely intend to enrol
    • UCAS fee (UK): single fee covers multiple UK university choices

    2. CAO and UCAS ? central application platforms

Irish undergraduate applicants use CAO (Central Applications Office). UK applicants use UCAS. Both are centralised platforms with their own application fees ? separate from individual university fees.

    • CAO fee: covers all Irish courses applied through the system (one fee, multiple choices)
    • UCAS fee: one fee covers up to 5 UK university choices
    • Both platforms are online ? payment by credit/debit card
    • Keep CAO / UCAS confirmation and payment receipt
    • Direct university applications (where CAO/UCAS not used): each university charges separately
    • Postgraduate applications in Ireland: usually direct to university (no central system)

    3. What happens to fees on visa refusal

Visa refusals are unfortunately part of the application process for some students. The treatment of application fees and deposits when a visa is refused varies by institution.

    • Application processing fees: almost never refunded ? this is standard practice globally
    • Enrollment deposit: SOME universities refund partially or fully on confirmed visa refusal
    • You usually need to provide the visa refusal letter as documentation for refund claims
    • Request the institution's refund policy in writing before paying any deposit
    • Student Matters advises on institutions with more flexible refund policies where known
    • Insurance: OSHC (Australia) and some policies may be refundable if you do not travel
